Multidisciplinary Modeling of Mantle Lithosphere Structure Within the Superior Craton, North America

چکیده
Abstract New 3D multi‐azimuthal receiver function analysis identified four regional seismic discontinuities dipping at 7–13° within the mantle of Superior craton North America; most are discordant to known major upper crustal structures. Widely observed crustal‐scale structures with near‐vertical axial planes striking east‐west indicate that recent and dominant phase folding horizontal shortening strain occurred during Kenoran (D2) deformation concurrent Au‐mineralization peak metamorphism 2.72–2.66 Ga. Two strike 065° 249°, southeast northwest, respectively. These strikes roughly parallel northern margin some intra‐cratonic features such as axis Quetico Basin. 355° 187°, east west, respectively, western craton. Our new observations reveal neither moderately dipping, nor coherent eclogitic layers characteristic modern plate tectonic subduction zones. Prominent east‐ west‐dipping relate best a Paleoproterozoic (Trans‐Hudson) deformation, which is rarely in crust. A xenoliths xenocrysts indicates carbonatitic metasomatism predominates above where strongly localized conductivity occurs whereas kimberlitic below broadly conductive mantle.

Joint modeling of lithosphere and mantle dynamics elucidating lithosphere-mantle coupling
[1] We provide new insights into the lithosphere-mantle coupling problem through a joint modeling of lithosphere dynamics and mantle convection and through comparison of model results with the high resolution velocity gradient tensor model along the Earth’s plate boundary zones. Using a laterally variable effective viscosity lithosphere model, we compute depth integrated deviatoric stresses ass...

متن کاملRecycling deep cratonic lithosphere and generation of intraplate magmatism in the North China Craton
Early Cretaceous alkaline picrites and high-magnesium basalts from the North China craton provide evidence for recycling of continental lithosphere by density foundering. Both the picrites and basalts contain xenocrystic olivines with high Fo92-93 and low CaO (<0.10%), consistent with the lavas’ derivation from, or interaction with Archean mantle lithosphere. Most importantly, both the picritic...

متن کاملAbnormal lithium isotope composition from the ancient lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton
Lithium elemental and isotopic compositions of olivines in peridotite xenoliths from Hebi in the North China Craton provide direct evidence for the highly variable δ(7)Li in Archean lithospheric mantle. The δ(7)Li in the cores of olivines from the Hebi high-Mg# peridotites (Fo > 91) show extreme variation from -27 to +21, in marked deviation from the δ(7)Li range of fresh MORB (+1.6 to +5.6) al...
